This annual festival, which features the greats of slack key guitar, will be held at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa Convention Center
Food and drink will be available for purchase; no outside food or beverages allowed. Free admission.
The 20th Annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival Kona Style on Sunday, Sept. 2, is your chance to hear over a dozen of Hawaiis finest slack key artists. The day-long event will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort.
Milton Lau , the Festivals organizer states, We are thrilled to be perpetuating an art form that started on the Big Island 180 years ago. Slack key guitar is a long standing tradition that represents everything that is special about our island. It exudes the aloha spirit.
According to the Ki-hoalu Foundation, which founded the festival in 1982, slack key techniques mimic the yodels and falsettos common in Hawaiian singing. There is a mystique surrounding slack key guitar music it is very personal, and can be very magical in feeling. The techniques that are used enhance the feeling of aloha, joy or longing expressed, sometimes all in the same song.
